Our products are essential to all people that lack and deal with inconsistent electrification, especially when individuals rely on electrical power to maintain lighting at night and communication via their mobile phone.
Problem to be addressed
Over 1.25 billion people internationally are still without access to electricity, this number is made up of almost all of whom live in developing countries. This includes about 550 million in Africa, and over 400 million in India. Access to electricity must be environmentally and socially sustainable. Africa and India are not the only countries with these problems as some places in the Caribbean and Latin America also face similar challenges. In some countries the price of electricity is too high for the poor and as such they are criminalized when they illegally steal electrical power from the national grids.
According to data collected by the world bank about 2.8 billion people still use solid fuels. Frequent power outages mean big losses in forgone sales and damaged equipment – 6 percent of turnover on average for formal enterprises, and as much as 16 percent of turnover for informal enterprises unable to provide their own backstop generation, charcoal, coal and dung—for cooking and heating. Every year fumes and smoke from open cooking fires kill approximately 1.5 million people mostly women and children, from emphysema and other respiratory diseases.
What happens when people don’t have electricity?
The number of people without access to energy in sub-Saharan Africa is projected to rise to 90-100 million in 2030. Without access to energy service, the poor will be deprived of the most basic of human rights and of economic opportunities to improve their standard of living. People cannot access modern hospital services without electricity, or feel relief from sweltering heat. Food cannot be refrigerated and businesses cannot function. Children cannot go to school in rain forests where lighting is required during the day. The list of deprivation goes on.
